Canon PhotoMarathon 2018 was held on 28 June 2018 last year with three exciting themes; SOLITUDESIMPLICITY and GLOW!  Azril Azam Bin Abdul Rahim and Timothy John Low,  share their experiences participating in last year’s PhotoMarathon and some valuable tips on conquering this year’s Canon PhotoMarathon XVII 2019 in this article!

Tips from Azril Azam Bin Abdul Rahim, Canon PhotoMarathon 2018 BEST OF SHOW (Open Category)

Canon PhotoMarathon is a very unique competition for all photography enthusiasts or professionals. During the competition, everyone will have the same starting point to begin with which gives each person an equal chance to win. The competition format challenges every photographer to come out of their comfort zones to capture a specific theme in a given amount of time. Here are a few tips that you can keep in mind when participating in this year’s Canon PhotoMarathon XVII 2019:

1. Understand and respect the “Time pressure”.
Keep the composition of your photo simple by practising a lot and shooting new concepts prior to Canon PhotoMarathon XVII 2019  to capture stunning shots in a stipulated amount of time.

2. Create a WOW composition.
Remember, capturing the right moment beats any creative composition and breaks all photography rules. But a good random moment can be very hard to find. To overcome this, create (or fake) the moment or fallback to a creative composition that you can use as a template which includes multi-exposure, selective colours, motion blur and more.

3. Be selective with your choice of colours.
Choose exciting colours that will draw the most attention. Understanding how colours work will help as well. If you feel like your composition is not working well with the colours, then it is safer to have a black and white composition.

Tips from Timothy John Low, Canon PhotoMarathon 2018 BEST OF SHOW (Student Category)

The Canon PhotoMarathon Singapore 2018 was my first win in a photography competition and my first time participating in one, which proves that anyone can win, regardless of experience. When I was announced as the winner, I was pleasantly surprised and shocked. I never expected to win anything, more so since I was just participating for the experience. So, what makes a winning photo? Well, I think you must be willing to experiment, and not be afraid to do things differently. I usually focus on street photography but decided to shoot portraits during the competition. In addition, I had recently discovered double exposure photography and was keen to try it out, never having done it before.

Need tips? Fret not! I’ve got 3 for you right here:

1. Don’t rush

When the theme is announced, resist the urge to be the first one out the door. Sit down for a while to picture, in your mind, what kind of image you want to make. Once you have a clear idea of what you want, think about which location would be best suited to your vision of your ideal photo. Make sure the location is somewhere easily accessible and won’t take a lot of time to get to. Remember, you only have 3 hours to travel there, get your shot, and travel back!

2. Manage your time

Managing your time is important. Knowing how much time you need for travel, meals, and breaks will help you to estimate how much time you have on location. Don’t forget to add buffer time so that you have enough time for submission.

3. Read up

There is always something new and interesting to learn. Examples of great reading material include photography blogs and magazines, such as fstoppers.com, iso1200.com, and eosworld.canon.com.sg! Sometimes, they feature works from other photographers that could inspire you!
