All eyes were on the sky on the night of 31 January 2018, when a highly-anticipated total lunar eclipse took place. The combination of a blue moon, a supermoon and a total eclipse, dubbed ‘super blue blood moon’ by NASA, was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence – it last happened in 1866!

In case you missed it, fret not. EOS World member Feng Shuo (@seal0509 on Instagram) captured several stunning shots from Marina Bay Sands, with a Canon EOS 5DS R, Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Canon EOS 77D. He also came prepared with an army of lenses, including the legendary Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM.

Feng Shuo has always dreamed trying out the Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM, Canon’s longest focal length L lens and here’s what he thought of it: “Initially, I did not have very high expectations in terms of image quality as it was first built more than two decades ago. However, I was surprised to find that it still produced sharp images. I hardly saw any distortions, chromatic aberrations, focus breathing and even lens flare. This lens stands out in the whole lens market and shows how Canon has always been great in producing lenses, and will be better in the future.”

Pairing the Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM with the Canon EOS 5DS R, Feng Shuo commented: “When post-processing photos of the moon, we usually need to crop a lot to make the moon looks “larger”. Hence, the resolution of the final image will be quite small. As the Canon EOS 5DS R has a 50MP sensor, I don’t have to worry about this. The final output still remains more than 20mp, with a lot of details preserved.”

Brace yourselves for these photos – they’re quite breath-taking to see!
