An engineer by day, EOS World member Calvin Chan celebrates 4 years of dabbling in macro photography and other genres – from shooting spiders to sunrises to birds.
Calvin Chan delved into macro photography after being inspired by some photographic work he saw online. Occasionally, he would join his friends to shoot landscapes for sheer fun and camaraderie.

Eventually, he started exploring sports, events and wildlife genres. On weekends, he goes birding with friends to be close to nature. As such, he has an eclectic assortment of images under his belt.

Out of all the genres, there are also several memorable experiences. Calvin shares two of his favourite photographic encounters with us.

The first was shooting a sunrise in Huangshan, China. “I awoke at 4 am to climb Bright Hill Peak in nearly – 9o C with my gear. My legs felt like jelly in the subzero temperature. But when the beautiful sunrise greeted me at the zenith of Huangshan mountain, it was totally worth it!” he recounts enthusiastically.

Calvin’s other memorable experience was in Bali. “My wife and I set off with a guide and boatman around 5am from Lovina beach in search of dolphins. When we got there, there were so many dolphins within a few metres from our boat. It was a rare experience for us and I’m so glad to have had some nice shots.”

Despite being a jack-of-all-trades, Calvin has managed to win the Canon x LTA “After Dark Photo Contest”, Leica and SC Global – “Sculptura”: A Photographic Study of Originality – Photo Competition, The New Paper’s “The Big Picture” contest and Workplace Safety and Health Council’s “Safety Starts With Me” competition so far.

Out of all the genres that Calvin dabbles in, birding has presented the most challenges. “When the bird is in flight, even fast FPS won’t guarantee the shot. You need lots of patience and understanding of the different species before being able to shoot what you have in mind,” Calvin confesses.

For landscape photography, Calvin tries to arrive earlier before the golden hours of sunrise or sunset. “Composition is key to ensure the results you get from the given weather conditions,” he advises.
