We speak to professional full-frame photographer Ryan Cheng who specialises in wedding, fashion and portraiture, to find out more about how he looks for stories to tell in moments of lifetime events and everyday life.

Tell us what led you to do photography as a career?

As a teenager, I was delighted by how a camera can document a scene seen through my eye to becoming a keepsake by simply using my friend’s point and shoot camera.

In 2008, when my appetite to shoot for more detailed pictures grew, I bought a DSLR. Since then, I’m always excited over every opportunity to capture moments.

What genres of photography have you tried professionally?

Fashion, wedding, food, portraiture, commercial, landscape and photojournalistic.

How would you describe your work to someone who hasn’t seen it?

A story captured in a still moment that lasts a lifetime.

What compelled you to specialise in wedding and lifestyle photography?

I enjoy capturing emotions, celebrations and candid moments that the newlyweds hardly get to savour on their big day. I am addicted to the number of perspectives you can find in a single moment in lifestyle photography.

Which camera and lenses do you use in your shoot?

I use the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 5D Mark II cameras. My arsenal of lenses include EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, EF24mm f/1.4L IS USM, EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF50mm f/1.8 STM lenses.

Any plans to upgrade your cameras?

Yes. I’m looking for an upgrade. Personally, I like the EOS-1D series cameras for their big build, faster frame per second, low light performance and the wider auto focus area of the frame to ensure correct focus for fast moving subjects.

The Canon EOS-1D X is a must-have for sports, wildlife and other fast action photography.

Tell us your most fulfilling achievement as a professional photographer?

It was a 2- to 3-day hike up Mount Rinjani (Indonesia) and waiting in the chilly weather to capture the magnificent Milky Way. Having my clients tell me they love my pictures, and winning a few local photography contests are some of my most fulfilling achievements as a professional photographer too.

How do you capture authentic moments of a wedding?

You can never replay a once-in-the-lifetime event, so the significant moments have to be captured. I’ll patrol the wedding to look out for candid moments.

The most authentic moments at a wedding are the antics of the maid of honour and the best man, the endearing way the newlyweds look at each other and the reluctant goodbyes from the parents of the bride.

What do you look to highlight when you shoot lifestyle pictures?

When you can deliver unique and artistic moments that are only meant for that client, it becomes very special. Photography is not just about the photographer. A couple’s willingness to have fun and enjoy the moment can take a photo to the next level.

My street/lifestyle portraiture shots tend to highlight my subjects in their everyday life – waiting for the bus, playing chess and having their meals. I love seeing these day-to-day moments play out through my lens.

What trends have you observed in photography these days?

The latest trends in photography ironically have been around for the longest time. For example, hipsters playing with SLR cameras when shooting with film used to be the norm in the past.

What advice would you give to those wanting to follow your footsteps?

It might sound clichéd, but practice make perfect! Eventually you will discover your own style while exploring.

Any exciting projects to look out for from you this year?

I have shooting projects on weddings and on documenting the Singapore Airshow. As well as a trip to Japan and India.
