Renowned international award-winning rock photographer Eddie Sung, a daddy of two teenagers, pays tribute to Daddies on Father’s Day with this pictorial from his images with Daddy themes.

When people ask me what my favourite iconic images are. I tell them – my kids. Yup, they are my greatest creations, no doubt about that.

Kids grow up very fast. Luckily I took plenty of photographs. My son is now 19, and my daughter 16. Over the years I’ve used a range of Canon cameras (film & digital) from  EOS-1D Mark II, EOS-1D Mark III, EOS 5D Mark I to EOS 5D Mark IV, down to point and shoot cameras: V3, IXUS 100 IS, IXUS 120 IS, IXUS 800 IS, and PowerShot S95.  But it does not matter what camera you use, as long as you capture the memories.

I’m glad to report that me and my kids share lots of fond memories over their growing-up years.

Here is my tribute to all dads: dad in-law, dad-to-be, granddads, god dads etc. Also to the single moms out there, playing daddy roles.

I like to start with my own dad, John.

I am lucky to have a supportive Dad (and Mom Jenny). Since young, they detected my artistic streak.  Long story short, on the 20th anniversary of his passing, my full page Canon newspaper advertisement was featured in the Straits Times. I felt my dad winking at me from up there.

When I became a daddy, all his advice over the years came flooding back to me.  That is what I tell my kids, I will advise you for as long as I am still breathing. My breath will not be wasted because when you become a parent one day, these advice will come back to you.

A recurring theme in Star Wars movies is the father-son dilemma. This image above was used as the lead advertisement image and backdrop of a stage during May the 4th, 2015 event at Suntec convention hall.

For my dedication and support to the 501st Garrison, they made me an official globally recognised Friend of the Legion. Of which, George Lucas, JJ Abrams, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Samuel L. Jackson etc are included in the Honorary Members list.

Always try to take photographs of your kids when they are young.  They sprout up so fast.  This is Ethan when he was 6 years old.  Now years later, an inch shorter than me, the back seat is almost too small for him. By next year, he’ll overtake me. Funny thing being parents, when our kids do better than us, we are delighted.

Usually when I get a new camera EOS 5D Mark I, I usually snap my kids.  This is Ella feeling comfortable in front of my very accurate portrait lens. I love shooting portraits. She’s now almost as tall as me.

My kids remind me of innocence and carefree nature. It is important to remember our kids are not there to be the persons we have failed to be. Great grades in school, successful careers etc. Let them walk their own unique paths.

Here is my son and I posing with my pirate bandanas. We went to the magazine editor’s home to get this nice shot taken. Thanks, John Cosgrove!

Instead of shooting a rock star in concert, rock star Roger McGuinn (and his wife, Camilla) paid a visit to my house and performed an impromptu concert for my family. I quickly captured the moment with a Canon V3 (APS film) point & shoot camera for posterity. I transferred it to digital for this article.

McGuinn’s the founder of The Byrds from the psychedelic 60’s.  He duly played his hit songs for us – Mr. Tambourine Man, Eight Miles High and Turn, Turn, turn etc. The highlight was he composed and sang a song “Singapore” on the spot.

Here is a rare image of rock star -Chris Stein (Blondie) – with pram, strolling around New York City with his family. The kids are now pretty and tall like their mom.

The first time we met, we discovered we had so much in common – laid back temperament, kids of somewhat the same age, collecting designer vinyl toys, photography and, of course, music. Chris and I are proud rock photography colleagues represented by the legendary Morrison Hotel Gallery.

The late amiable President SR Nathan in 2006, hosted the I Love Children ambassadors at the Istana, to hang out with this people’s president.

I’m the charity’s Vice-President since its beginning, and happy to play official photographer that memorable day. It was a fun day for the children ambassadors as seen from the image. It was a treat for me to drive my SUV into the Istana (with strict clearance).

So cute, these little Darth Vaders!  It is so rare to see so many kids in decent Vader costumes all lined up on a stage. After I took the shoot, all their parents quickly took their kids on stage before they scattered.

It is fun to see parents sometimes becoming like kids too, at least just for a little while.

They sure start young. These trainee Jedis are certainly causing some disturbance in the Force (read: enjoying themselves in Jedi training school). With this image, I see future leaders. Hope they’ll still have fun when they become adults.

I like this shot of a band member during a break from soundcheck, spending quality time with his family on the floor. Just chilling.  The band, in question, is the awesome Plainsunset. Sadly, they’ve since rode off into the sunset in pursuit of their individual creative horizons.

Coincidentally, I recently caught up with Jonathan Chan at the May 4 event at the F1 Pit Building. He was the guitarist for Dark Empire, a band which got together just for the event.

I shot this daddy and child image in Woodstock. Chris Stein (Blondie) spending quality time away from the tour and stage, to bond with his daughter in the park.  I made the image look more surreal.  The family liked this image so much; they even requested a hi-res file to print.

Always nice when the family gets to hang out with a bona-fide legend. Here’s Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple Computers enjoying a Hard Rock café lunch with my family, Elaine, Ethan and Ella.

Meals are bonding time for any family.  These days, we seem to have extra guests at our dining table – iPads and iPhones.  These inventions are kind courtesy of our dear friend, Steve Wozniak’s company! When I see these gadgets, I think Steve is there with us in spirit. Haha.

I am a collector of things that are pop culture. I got my kids to put on my customised Stealth helmets. Together with my gallery logo T-shirts.  You can call them my … Clone Troopers.  Haha.

Dads, it is important to feel young always. My friends tease me about my second childhood. I always correct them to saying I’m still in my first one!  At least in spiritual, emotional and at heart. As they say in a galaxy not so far away, May the Force be with you!

Happy Daddy’s Day, Daddy Cools out there! Grow older but not old! Rock on!
