Two EOS World community ambassadors, Lemjay Lucas and Siyuan Ma, were given the rare opportunity by Canon to be part of the official photography team for Singapore Fashion Week 2017. The ambassadors worked closely with the team to provide a holistic picture for the event, covering various aspects from backstage to runway shoots. Here are some highlights from the show.

Backstage

The backstage is perhaps the busiest place to be during fashion shows. Behind the glamorous spotlights of the runway, there are always tons of things going on behind the scene, which often occur all at the same time.

Pre-show preparations begin hours before the actual show. There are many interesting moments to be captured here, from make-up shots, to candid moments, to the models’ interactions with the designers.

Things start to get more fast-paced just before and during the show. The all-dressed-up models will all line up behind the runway and present their first look behind the stage, where designers and make-up artists continue to work tirelessly for final touch-ups and adjustments. It was however the best opportunity to capture some of the most interesting shots, ranging from model portraits to close-up shots of designers at work.

The intense mood lightens up immediately after the finale as the backstage is transformed into a venue for celebration.

The Runway

One of the challenges in capturing runway shots is getting yourself into position before the show begins.  There are lots of photographers and videographers that will be coming from different media outlets and everyone will want to get their shots right; thus, the media’s pit can be very crowded.  The key here is to coordinate with your peers and work as a team if you could, so that all of you can capture great images.

As the models hit the runway, this is where the action begins for us photographers.  Timing is essential as the models walk fast and they take only a few seconds before they come too close for us to focus and take a snap.  Therefore, it is vital that we prepare our cameras with the right settings for this scene because everything happens so fast that there is not enough time for adjustments.

For runway photography, the most important photos to capture are the following: full and half body shots of the model, the designer’s walk on the runway, and a group photo of the models together with the designer.  These are usually the images that editors are looking for to publish in their magazines and online articles.

Covering this year’s Singapore Fashion Week was really a great experience.  It gave us an insight on what was happening behind the scenes of such a big event, and tested our capabilities as photographers.
